The sommelier serves as a mediator between wine producers and consumers, providing expert advice and ensuring quality presentation and service of wine.

The profession of sommelier developed in the 19th century with the advent of large hotels and restaurants. The term "sommelier" comes from the Provençal word "saumalier," which meant a person responsible for transporting wine. A sommelier must have deep knowledge in wine and gastronomy, including tasting, customer communication, and pairing drinks with dishes.
