Saint Julien
The Saint-Julien appellation produces archetypal red wine from the left bank. Saint-Julien is among the five appellations from which the famous Grand Cru Classé wines originate. Among them, it is the smallest in size but very compact in terms of geology and microclimate, which leads to an overall very distinctive character and high cumulative quality—80% of its production belongs to producers with Grand Cru Classé status.
Saint-Julien does not have any 1er Grand Cru Classé, but it more than compensates for this at the second level of classification. The best vineyards are traditionally those that 'face the water.' They also differ slightly in character—those closest to the water are known for their elegance, while wines from further inland have a somewhat firmer tone.
