Saint Emilion
The village of Saint-Émilion is located 35 km northeast of Bordeaux. Along with Médoc, Graves, and Pomerol, the Saint-Émilion appellation is one of the key red wine-producing regions in Bordeaux. This appellation is much smaller than the Médoc, and its main grape varieties are Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
Wines from the Saint-Émilion appellation were not included in the 1855 Bordeaux wine classification. The first formal classification of wines in AOC Saint-Émilion occurred in 1955, and unlike the 1855 classification, it is regularly updated.
There are two estates classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé A, 13 estates in the Premier Grand Cru Classé B category, and 47 estates in the Grand Cru Classé category. In addition, there are numerous vineyards classified as Grand Cru.
