Pessac Leognan
Pessac-Léognan is a prestigious appellation, officially separated from the Graves area in 1987 to recognize its high-quality red and white wines. The appellation is bordered by forests to the south and merges with the southern outskirts of Bordeaux to the north. The predominant soils are gravel and sand. Red grape varieties cover approximately 1,491 hectares, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. White wines are mainly produced from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon grapes on 275 hectares. These varieties thrive on sandy soils, resulting in exceptionally long-lived wines.
In other regions and countries, wines made from a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon are typically consumed within a few years of harvest. Here, however, white wines often age in oak barrels, adding complexity and making Pessac-Léognan home to some of the world's finest white wines, worthy of aging.
