Pauillac
The jewel of the Médoc, the port town of Pauillac, is located on the left bank of the Gironde River, just south of the St. Estèphe appellation. This area is home to 18 wines from the prestigious 'Grands Crus Classés' category, including three from the most famous Médoc quintet—Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Mouton Rothschild, and Château Latour. Other renowned châteaux include Pichon Baron, Pichon Comtesse, Pontet-Canet, Lynch-Bages, Grand-Puy-Lacoste, among others.
The appellation spans over 1,200 hectares of vineyards, primarily situated on prized alluvial gravel soils, where Cabernet Sauvignon thrives exceptionally well. To preserve the distinct character of the local wines, parcels with predominantly sandy soils or younger river deposits are explicitly excluded from the appellation. This safeguards the Pauillac name from devaluation, as nearly all its wines belong to the higher or highest tier, known for their power, strength, and unparalleled longevity.
