Moulis
The appellation named after the town of Moulis-en-Médoc forms an enclave within the Haut-Médoc appellation, situated between Margaux and Saint-Julien, near the small port of Lamarque. However, its vineyards do not reach the river, making them 'inland.' The total vineyard area of the appellation spans approximately 600 hectares.
Moulis, along with Listrac, was carved out of the Haut-Médoc appellation, acknowledging that the quality of the wines here surpasses that of Haut-Médoc. Although there are no Grand Cru Classé wines among them, 14 wines belong to the Cru Bourgeois category, including two from the (formerly) top classification of Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel—Château Poujeaux and Château Chasse-Spleen.
