Montagne-Saint Émilion
The largest of the 'satellite' appellations of St. Émilion boasts a rich history, attractive landscapes, and several excellent vineyard sites.
The hilly vineyards of Montagne feature highly diverse sun exposure, leading to variations in the character and quality of the wines. Many prime locations are still awaiting their full potential—most winemakers use mechanical harvesting to keep market prices low. As a 'satellite' appellation, Montagne must sell its wines at lower prices than St.-Émilion from a market perspective. It is not easy for winemakers to step out of this shadow and gain recognition from the professional public. So far, Château Beauséjour, Château Maison Blanche, Château Faizeau, Château Messile-Aubert, and Château Calon have achieved the most success.
