Château COS D´ESTOURNEL is located in the northernmost part of the Médoc in the Saint-Estéphe appellation. Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel built this remarkable and distinctive building at the beginning of the 19th century. At first glance, this chateau might seem like a folly in style, but if you ever visit this impressive oriental-style palace, be prepared to be instantly swept away by the pervasive exotic atmosphere of an Indian bazaar.
The winery is named after the founder's surname, and partly after the pebble-strewn hillside. The word "Cos" means "pebble hill" in the old Gascon dialect . The gravelly slopes on limestone bedrock are promising soil for an excellent vineyard. Its porosity does not allow it to retain water, forcing the vines to sink their roots deeper down to the limestone bedrock. This slows down the flow of sap and thickens it. The special combination of soils then gives the grapes an exceptional and distinctive flavour.
The estate was originally used as stables and wine cellars. Louis-Gaspard travelled tirelessly across the ocean to India and Arabia, promoting and selling his wine and bringing back the wild horses he kept in the lush meadows surrounding the vineyard. One day, while at sea, he noticed that the wine stored in barrels on the ship had improved considerably. So he took part of the cargo bound for India back to France. He then offered the wine from these casks to his guests, who were delighted with it. Perhaps it was here that the almost continuous fame of Cos d'Estournel wine began.
