Puisseguin is the easternmost appellation within the so-called St.-Emilion satellites. The origin of the name of this appellation can be found in a compound of the term Puy (one of the local terms for a hill - see e.g. Ch. Grand-Puy-Lacoste) and the name Seguin, which belonged to one of the commanders of Charlemagne's army.
The terrain of Puisseguin is relatively very compact - it is based on clay-limestone soils with slopes oriented to the south and south-west. Much of the subsoil is limestone, which adds character to the wines and provides favourable conditions for vine growth even in dry years.
The local wines have a very good tannic structure. Although this can be a risk factor in more problematic years, in good vintages it raises Puisseguin's production to an often surprising level of quality.

Château La Mauriane
Château La Mauriane is a winery with four blocks of old vines on a beautiful chalk and clay terroir. Pierre Taix, the owner and winemaker of La Mauriane, aims to produce wine that aligns with the terroir: organic wine cultivation with minimal mechanical intervention in the vineyard. The goal is to respect the structure and life in the soil.
The wine production is very classic for Bordeaux from the early 20th century: it uses native yeasts, small vats, no added SO2, and only small containers. La Mauriane ages in oak barrels of various sizes, with oak sourced from different forests in Europe. The wine is bottled without filtration and fining.
