Château Landat
Gabriel Fabre purchased Château Landat in 1976. His son Vincent joined him in 1982 to jointly manage not only Landat but also other properties owned by the family, most of which are in Haut-Médoc near Vertheuil and Cissac-Médoc. Today, Domaines Fabre is unusual not only for the quality and value of its wines but also because it sells its wines directly rather than through agents, courtiers, or the 'place' (an informal network of wine merchants controlling most sales in Bordeaux).
Château Landat is still a rarity. It primarily consists of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), blended with Merlot (35%) and Petit Verdot (5%). Many wineries today often have Merlot-dominated blends, even on the Left Bank. This wine has a traditional taste: never overly extracted, even with a 3-4 week maceration, and offers beautiful fruit with classic cedar notes. Yet, the winery utilizes everything technology can offer without letting technology dictate the goal. Destemming, temperature control, and micro-oxygenation all contribute to finesse without compromising balance and energy.
