Chateau Grand Pontet
Château Grand-Pontet is located in the town of Saint-Émilion, situated on the famous limestone plateau of this region. Since 1980, this Grand Cru Classé estate has belonged to the Bécot family, who also own Château Beau-Séjour Bécot, La Gomier, and Joanin Bécot. Château Grand-Pontet produces a unique first wine with a dominant Merlot variety and a second wine, Dauphin de Grand Pontet.
This estate includes 14 hectares of vineyards in a single block, consisting of three types of soil: shallow layers of soil on limestone, clay-limestone soil, and sandy soil with a clay-limestone subsoil. The area is planted with 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, with vines averaging 35 years old.
The grapes are first hand-picked and sorted in the vineyard, then sorted again in the cellar. The berries are fermented with natural yeasts in stainless steel tanks with temperature control and macerated for up to five weeks for additional extraction. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in new French oak barrels and then ages in barrels for 14–18 months, with 60–80 percent in new French oak barrels. Château Grand-Pontet produces around 55,000 bottles annually.
