Giscours was lucky in 2008 - it avoided the unfortunate hailstorm and the consequences associated with it. For the first time ever, the chateau has applied a rigorous selection of parcels and the wine has clearly gained in depth and nobility.

Medium-dark ruby-red with dark pigmentation. Ripe, dark fruit aromas are moderate and there is an appealing new oak. On the palate, a pleasant freshness lifts the perfumed red fruit from the wine. The structure is supple and medium weight and the alcohol is balanced. The length is acceptable but there is not a great concentration of fruit. A restrained wine with typical Margaux character. Quite powerful, with 'hidden' tannin on the finish.

This wine comes in a 1.5 litre bottle called Magnum. The Magnum size is ideal for a gentleman for an evening out, for example.

Château Giscours

Château Giscours is a highly regarded estate in the Margaux appellation of Haut-Médoc, north of Bordeaux city. In the 1855 Bordeaux classification, it was rated as a Third Growth (3ème Cru), and since the 1990s, it has moved from being a Merlot-dominated wine to a more long-term blend, typically 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot.

The estate has been owned and gradually rebuilt by several owners. The first records of vineyards here date back to the mid-16th century. In 1654, Louis XIV passed through here, and when he tasted the excellent wine from Giscours, he spoke highly of it. The estate was later managed by the Saint-Simon family, who had been going through turbulent times for some time. It only received new and ambitious projects in the second half of the 20th century. Dutch wine merchant and enthusiast Eric Albada Jelgersma took over the estate, restored the vineyards, and dedicated considerable effort and money to the winery. Within ten years, the winery managed to get back on its feet.
