2014
Vintage Quality: Good
Current Status: Ready to drink, suitable for further aging
The 2014 vintage in Bordeaux is often overlooked but contains some great gems. A mild winter with plenty of rain led to early budding. Despite the threat of rot and a severe hailstorm in June, the Indian summer in September and warm October saved the vintage.
The resulting yields were of average size but generally of high quality. Dry white wines had ripe fruit flavors thanks to the late summer and good acidity. The best examples were complex with subtropical notes, though others lacked elegance, suppressed by the late heat in the growing season.
The red wines were classic, and some very notable ones were made. The best wines had concentrated, pure fruit, good acidity, and smooth fine tannins. Although many wines were accessible in character, they were not lacking in complexity. Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wines from Left Bank estates in Pauillac, Margaux, Saint-Estèphe, Pessac-Léognan, and Saint-Julien were particularly successful. Great examples can be found throughout Bordeaux.
The 2014 vintage is excellent, with many wines excellent for drinking now, and the best should hold well for many years in cellars.
