2007
Vintage Quality: Good
Current Status: Ready to drink, best consumed soon
The 2007 vintage in Bordeaux was marked by a challenging growing season with cool and wet weather, which caused mildew problems. However, the warm start of September helped the ripening process. Estates on the Right Bank in Pomerol and Saint-Émilion were the first to start harvesting their Merlot in mid-September. The Left Bank had to wait a little longer for the grapes to reach phenolic ripeness.
The wines brought pleasant surprises, with aromatic fruit at the core of both whites and reds. Whites, especially from Pessac-Léognan, were more successful, offering fresh fruit and excellent acidity. Red wines were lighter than usual, lacking the heavy structure needed for long-term aging. Nevertheless, some excellent wines were produced, with the best examples showing plush forest fruits, ripe tannins, and well-balanced acidity. Merlot had more problems than Cabernet Sauvignon, which better utilized the extended ripening period, usually resulting in a refined, well-integrated character, and most producers favored Cabernet Sauvignon in their best blends. The best red wines typically came from Pomerol and Saint-Julien, but some good wines were also made in Pauillac. The least successful reds often lacked body and ripe fruit, remaining incredibly tannic.
Although the 2007 vintage is not among the best, some excellent wines were made, especially Cabernets and white wines from Pessac-Léognan. While the best may still be drinkable, most have probably passed their peak.
